Here’s a quick wrap-up of the Rhodes Summer Camp Saga!!

The saga continues at the Rhodes School Summer Camp. We are nearing the end of the Arts Summer Camp at Rhodes and the students are preparing the stage for the showcase this Thursday. So much excitement in the room with the center of “The Lion King” expression thriving with creativity throughout today’s art session!  ”hakuna matata / means no worries” summer camp students enjoy painting, relaxing from today’s rehearsal (theatre, music, and dance) for the showcase Thursday.. sunset in the making..

We are all getting pumped for Thursday! and with a few days left for preparation, the kids begin to realize that the Arts Summer Camp will soon come to an end.  Rhodes has an exemplary school focus on the arts, and the kids really connected with the “The Lion King” regardless of age.  It will be a very emotional Thursday as we say our goodbyes.  On behalf of the instructors and MOCAH, we truly are inspired by the youth that came everyday and shared with us their creativity and dreams.  We hope we have instilled in them encouragement to express their artistic talents at every chance possible, and to not be afraid to participate in genre’s of art that they typically do not expose themselves to.  One child told me that art was their outlet, a way for them to imagine and create without limits.  This notion still holds true, not only for kids but everyone willing to expand in the artistic realm.  Therefore, art no longer becomes an activity or choice, it is naturally intertwined in every aspect of life.

At the beginning of the 2nd Week, sessions were moving smoothly and everyone was ready to learn new activities to prepare for the play.  Whether it was remembering new lines for drama, learning a dance routine, or playing rhythmic beats, students were immersed mentally and physically in “The Lion King” theme of the camp.  As the Art Instructor, I wanted to make sure they were able to capture the moments of their residence at the summer camp.  Growing up, there were very few things that I kept on to when leaving a school or camp.  The t-shirt was typically the only item that I was able to hold on to, probably because it was filled with names of friends/teachers as well as memories and what I liked most about camp.  Everyone was pumped about designing their own t-shirts to represent there summer experience!  The statement “The Circle of Life” triggers all the experiences of life, including childhood memories.  The children made certain that this summer camp experience would not be forgotten.

The First Week of Rhodes School Summer Camp was filled with much anticipation regarding the activities that will soon take place for the next three weeks.  Joined by Bolaji Isiba (Music), Angela Miles (Theatre), and Roberta Paixao (Dance), we set off on our artistic journey leading the kids in various forms and expressions of creativity through visual arts, sounds, drama, and movement.  We started out with almost 10 kids but the number of students nearly tripled as the week progress.  The “word” was spreading about the fun the kids were having at the camp, and parents were eager to get their children involved.  Kids created crowns, paws, and tails this week during the visual arts sessions. This was a great start to the camp, and set the “stage” for the upcoming weeks!
