Barbara Jordan Art Contest Winning Designs!

Art Angels and The Queens of Creativity provided volunteer support for the Barbara Jordan Art Contest.  They participated with and gained support from of a diverse panel of judges with both professional artist backgrounds as well as those that work in the field of disabilities.   The artwork submitted by students will be used as creative reference for the design of a commemorative public art project reflecting the concepts surrounding Barbara Jordan as a focal point in  the theme of “Unique Abilities”.  Below are the winning contest designs.

Mural-Cure Workshop Art Display at Shalom Health Ministries

The Art Angels Healing Arts Program created a unique collection of healing art for The Shalom Health Ministries.  In an effort to promote health awareness, community members were invited to participate in a series of expressive arts workshops to create healing works of art. This healing art collection has now been put on display in the clinic to accentuate the clinic environment, symbolizing the neighborhood support and promotes health awareness for the clinical staff, care providers and patients to celebrate wellness.

Woodson Art Students Teach at the Communities Campus Partnerships Conference

The Art of Leadership” is a community based art project that uses expressive art as a tool to promote emotional wellness to 30 sixth and seventh grade students attending Woodson’s K-8 Leadership Academy.  On Saturday, April 21st Four (4) students were selected to attend the 15th Anniversary Community Campus Partnerships Conference. During the conference, students were given the opportunity to provide a demonstration of their experience and newly discovered expertise using the mediums of mandala-art and fractal geometry. During the Fall and Spring semesters, weekly workshops teaching these techniques have been implemented to compliment the school’s existing curriculum focused on Leadership skills.

These art forms are used as a means to introduce children to coping mechanism for mental health. The activities are designed to support young people by exposing them to this art form that brings focus to establishing and recognizing patterns in their day to day lives among community, school, friends and family members. By creatively recognizing life patterns, students gain the opportunity to build, strengthen and implement stronger decision making skills which is at the core of creating “Great Leaders”. The student involvement was highly welcomed by the conference attendees and their involvement portrayed how art could be used to promote social wellness in the classroom as well as everyday life.  For more information please email artangels@mocah.org.

Art Angels Healing Arts Workshop: “The Memory Mosaic Quilt”

On Saturday, April 28 from 10:30am – 11:30am, Angels Healing Arts Program will facilitated a “Paper Memory Mosaic” workshop for 150 women attending the Mosaic Woman…Brokenness to Wholeness Conference at The Luke Ministries.  This conference was designed to engage women in the creative process to empower emotional wellness.   A paper memory mosaic quilt is a fun way to preserve materials that have personal  significance for the creator.  As a historical art form traditionally practiced among women,  memory quilts were designed to celebrate and preserve memories that have personal significance for each of the women attending this conference.  Participants gained an art  experience that will help to convey the value of using positive emotions to help build  and  reinforce positive self-esteem.  Art Angels Healing Arts Program and The Queens of Creativity worked together to  demonstrate the  collaborative power that creativity plays in our lives.

Word of Mouth is a project that invites participants to contribute to an interactive work of art using the power of ‘WORDS’ based on a variety of different languages to convey the importance of a healthy smile. Word of mouth refers to oral communication and the passing of information from person to person. Through this unique healing arts workshop series, we collaborate with community members to make the connection of good emotional and overall health. This provides a unique opportunity to open positive dialogue, encouraging healthy habits while encouraging participants to care about themselves and to take responsibility for their  health.

Austin Bazaar has been donating musical instruments to MOCAH (Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston) since November of 2011. In this video, MOCAH Co-founder Rhonda Adams describes some of the myriad ways her organization has put these instruments to use with the help of other Texas nonprofits.

The Smart Garden Project at Sugarland Middle School

“The S.M. Art Garden Project “ (Science Math ART) is a collaboration with MD Anderson, Sugarland Middle School and The Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston, to assist with providing and conducting  hands on mural art activities using fractal geometry or ‘Mandala Art”  techniques to enhance the school’s garden while also teaching about environmental, life science and math concepts.

The garden mural project will be implemented throughout the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 school year.  As a result, MOCAH’s  Art Angels Healing Arts Program will assist in facilitating the design and production of a garden mural with student and teacher input and participation. The final mural designs will depict a creative message about the valuable role life the sciences play in the purpose, preservation, restoration and sustainability of our environment.  Sugarland Middle School will present this environmentally themed mural during a culminating event hosted in celebration of Earth Day.  This will bring great community-wide awareness and publicity to the teachers, school, and the school district and overall community of Sugarland. This practice is demonstrative of the importance of community support in various cultural arts programs.

The expressive arts workshops will be scheduled during the fall and spring semesters during ancillary periods and involve 6th graders at Woodson Leadership Academy.  At the end of the semester, 6 students will be selected to attend the 15th Anniversary  Community Campus Partnerships Conference on Saturday, April 21st.  This project is funded by The Collaborative for Children through a grant provided by the Hogg Grant for Mental Health, and principal partner in the South Region Children’s Mental Health Collaborative (SRCMHC)

AIDS Walk Houston 2012!

Join Art Angels as we support Bering Omega Community Services in fundraising for The 23rd Annual AIDS Walk Houston on Sunday, March 11, 2012.  Proceeds from AIDS Walk Houston benefit AIDS Foundation Houston, Inc as well as several other Houston-area HIV/AIDS service organizations. The funds that participants raise supports education and pediatric programs, provides housing, food, medical care, counseling, and job training to more than 100,000 Houstonians each year. Join in the fun!

The Women’s Summit was an amazing event, with guest speakers such as Sheila Jackson Lee and powerful discussions of empowerment, health awareness, and community enrichment.  The expo provided an opportunity for Art Angels to share information about MOCAH programs while promoting social wellness.  We would like to thank everyone that was able to come out and help with the Women’s Summit Resource Table.  We really enjoyed everyone’s enthusiasm and efforts.  We were able to disperse a good amount of earrings while connecting with different organizations.

MLK Day of Service with Habitat for Humanity

On Jan. 16, 2012, Houston Habitat for Humanity invited individuals, organizations, and volunteer groups to come together for a day of service to preserve the rich history of the Fifth Ward Community.  5 Art Angels volunteers amongst 60 volunteers helped paint two houses for citizens in need at 732 Majestic & 736 Majestic Houston, Texas 77002. We would like to thank our Art Angels for playing an active role in community service!

Art Angels Creates a GREEN Christmas!

Art Angels hosted a Volunteer Day during the holidays in an effort to recycle the generous donations of  hand bags, shoes and accessories from Charming Charlie as well as musical instruments donated from the Austin Music Bazaar.   Art Angels Volunteers helped to sort and package these items that were later distributed to several non-profit organizations in effort to assist in providing gifts for more than 500 Houston families valued at over $6,000 in gifts for the 2011 holiday season!

Program Director, Rhonda Radford Adams, recently attended the Johnson & Johnson the Society for the Arts in Healthcare’s one day, complimentary training for the continued development of their Houston /Galveston network. This training session provided resources and education to health care and arts professionals. The Society for the Arts in Health care is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation in Washington, DC. Founded in 1991, the Society for the Arts in Health care is dedicated to advancing arts as integral to health care. Arts in health care is a diverse, multidisciplinary field dedicated to transforming the health care experience by connecting people with the power of the arts at key moments in their lives.

On Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, Art Angels is hosting an Arts Program Committee Fair to enlist the help of volunteers, committee members, program partners and visual art teachers.   Art Angels is an expressive arts program that offers a variety of uniquely designed outreach projects with a strong cast of community partners. In modern society the gap between art and healing is slowly being closed through the efforts of art-in-medicine or healing art programs

The Art of Leadership project  curriculum will also compliment this existing curriculum while focusing on using the core art mediums of visual art; photography and creative writing to teach leadership skills through service learning projects. The activities are designed to
support young people by linking community volunteers with students, schools and families in the opportunity to participate and implement service- learning activities.

The expressive arts workshops will be scheduled during the fall and spring semesters during ancillary periods and involve 6th graders at Woodson Leadership Academy.

ART ANGELS PARTNERS WITH 2011 ROTARY CLUB HOUSTON SKYLINE HEALTH FAIR AT THE TELLEPSEN YMCA

On Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., The Rotary Club of Houston Skyline, in conjunction with the Tellepsen Family YMCA  hosted the 2011 Health and Wellness Fair, located at 808 Pease St., Houston, TX  77002 with Museum of Cultural Arts Houston Art Angels Healing Arts Program to creatively bring healing through art.

The purpose of the community wide health fair was to increase health awareness through education and prevention, with a focus on the downtown population of Houston and MOCAH has brought its own unique contribution to the cause.  ”We are excited to bring the Art Angels program to serve as one of the top 25 contributors to this year’s health fair, as the program ingeniously combines the creative arts to promote better health,” Rhonda Radford-Adams, Director of AAHAP.

During the fair, Art Angels provided an ‘art-in-dentistry’ activity entitled, “Sugar Bug Sculptures.” “This healing arts activity teaches children and parents about the process of tooth decay, while also becoming familiar with visiting the dentist,” said Adams.  The health fair event was free to the public and served more than 300 visitors both children and adults  free to the general public.  Special thanks for support from our community partners:

ART ANGELS HONORS THE BARBARA JORDAN FOUNDATION ‘UNIQUE ABILITIES’                       AWARD RECIPIENTS

In an effort to demonstrate the collaborative power that creativity plays in our lives, Art Angels Healing Arts Program recently presented a live art presentation entitled,   “The Art of Living” during the Barbara Jordan Back to School Scholarship Awards Luncheon 2011.  Using art mediums such as painting and collaging, artist Rhonda Radford Adams co-created an interactive work of art among  15 recent graduates that were being honored with the “Unique Abilities Award” during this year’s  luncheon. Students gained an appreciation for an art experience that helped to help build, identify and reinforce positive self-esteem as new graduates.

“Our healing arts program encourages artists to share their art medium as a tool to co-create with others”, says Program Director Rhonda Radford Adams.   The original artwork will be offered as a communal collection of healing art that will be made available for auction to help fundraise for the Barbara Jordan Foundation’s Ambassadors Program and MOCAH’s Art Angels Healing Arts Program.

Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation is a charitable organization that provides scholarships and services for students with emotional, mental, and physical disabilities.  Their vision is to work with school districts to create college ready students with “Unique Abilities”.

THE HEALING ART ZONE: WELLNESS WORKSHOPS

MOCAH’s Art Angels Mobile Arts Unit conducted a 4-week series of summer arts workshops designed to engage Worthing High School students with creative experiences that would help encourage positive self-esteem and overall emotional wellness. Artists, Rhonda Radford Adams, SaRita Dean and Emmanuel Oni worked with several students to provide this series of Wellness Workshops such as Vision Board Collage, 3D Face to Face Mask and Pop Art Portraits to create their own body of work that reflects a common message of ‘Self-Discovery’.

Funded by Collaboratives for Children,  the Healing Arts Zone  was developed  to establish a foundation for a multi-year and multi-disciplinary approach towards engaging students in hands-on creative experiences that foster social, emotional, physical and mental well being.  An online exhibition of the students’ drawings, designs and other related artwork will be part of the Mental health component of the program.

Mask Making Workshop

In May, Art Angels Mobile Arts Unit conducted a very unique Face-to-Face 3D workshop series designed to engage 40 eens that were part of the annual summer forum for HIV+ Teens attending the AIDS Foundation Universal Teen Camp.  Artists and Program Director, Rhonda Radford Adams along with several volunteer Art Angels (SaRita Dean; Emmanuel Oni worked; Chloe Semien and Joshua Bennet) worked with several participants to create handmade masks using  fibercast and  discarded jewelry from Charming Charlie, adding a unique flavor of ‘bling’ to their masks.

Magnolia Roots Mural Project

The Museum of Cultural Arts  Houston will work alongside Texans Together and the Magnolia  Roots Community  Garden to assist in the creation of a mural dedicated to the spirit of  the garden and history of the Magnolia Park Community. The 12 panel where painted on April 16^th at MOCAH Studios and installed during the Earth Day Celebration at the Magnolia Roots Community Garden. MOCAH founder Reginald Adams and Co-founder, Rhonda Adams with representatives from Texans Together and Magnolia Roots  Community Garden, where available on the exhibition day event.

Mission: The mission of the Queens of Creativity is to empower others through the arts and creativity.

Biography: In January 2011 a small group of artists gathered for an art workshop at the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH).  Ideas, laughs and creativity energy was shared amongst the artists, which for the most part were all strangers. A candid photo was taken of the artists working and subsequently posted on Facebook.  As the image circulated amongst the participating artists one photo in particular garnered exception attention as it embodied the vibrant energy that was shared  in the studio that cold January morning.  As the comments continued to build, Reginald Adams, MOCAH President/CEO made a comment to the affect, “The Queens of Creativity are in the house.”  The comment sparked a firestorm of activity as each of the artists began to build on the moniker and ideas began to fly about that would birth the formation of what has become a living breathing entity, the Queens of Creativity.  The charter members, Rhonda Radford Adams, Sam Turner, Ann Johnson, Nia Jacob, Cherry Meekins and Artistsa Elisabet began meeting regularly to build upon the concept and add structure to what has now become a creative force in Houston’s local arts community.  Today, the QoC seeks to reach out to other artists and creative professionals to leaverage the power of collective consciousness and empower those young and young at heart in utilizing their own creativity abilities to improve on their own quality of life.

ART Angels Programs

Art of Culture (AOC): AOC mission is to provide exhibitions, special events, and workshops that nurture and promote emerging and established artists. AOC uses a unique program strategy for promoting the arts by fusing visual, culinary, musical, and performing arts into each event as well as educating both patrons and artists through workshops and gallery talks.  Each AOC workshop for the artists is focused on a different aspect of the art world.  AOC workshops are lead by Curators, Entertainment Attorneys, marketing/P.R. specialists, CPA’s, and Fine Art Printers. Accompanying the Art of Culture exhibitions and workshops are the Art of Culture for Kids, which are children’s workshops that are focused on the teaching of art forms specific to the various cultural heritages represented in Houston. Art of Culture provides as easily assessable environment for the expression and appreciation of art and creativity.

We provide the canvas and paint; you bring your creativity and an open mind to enjoy the process.

2. Transfer your image to a canvas.

The Face 2 Face 3D offers the artist and non-artist alike to learn exciting and cool mixed media sculpture techniques in a fun and non-threatening environment.

The workshop is a 4 hour session for $110 per person.

Guests will be guided in creating a personal mold of their face,  after mold is dry; guests will then paint and embellish with jewelry.

Workshops can be held anytime based on availability.

Workshops on Thursday, Fridays or Saturday evening can be reserved with a guaranteed minimum of 20 guests.

All other available days & times can be reserved with a guaranteed minimum of 10 people.

MISSION
Our mission is to use public art and creativity as tools for social awareness and community development.

PURPOSE
• Encourage creative awareness and the appreciation of art and cultural diversity through community participation and involvement in the arts.
• Support the practice of traditional cultural art forms and disciplines.
• Empower community members by using multidisciplinary art methods that reinforce learning skills, which promote individual and social health awareness.
• Record and document past, present and future artists of various cultures and genres.
• Recover traditional and historical artistic methods used for juxtaposing art into daily life.
• Facilitate innovative programs, activities, and events, which strengthen the relationships between artists, communities, and public/private businesses.

OUR HISTORY
MOCAH is a tax-exempt 501(c) (3) cultural arts organization co-founded in 1999 by artists, Reginald and Rhonda Adams. The evolution of the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston began from the founders’ vision to create an arts institution without walls, an organization that will go to the people who are unable to come to it.

After spending a decade working with community based arts organizations in the Houston area, the founders realized that one of the largest cultural voids in the inner city and urban communities was the lack of exposure and access to the arts. Despite the growing number of museums, galleries and arts spaces found in Houston, large populations of children and their families still do not visit these creative and cultural destinations. With this understanding the founding artists pursued the creation of an arts organization that would focus entirely on filling this void and then strategize projects and programs that would function as outreach tools to serve these targeted audiences.

Through our combined programs we have served over 15,000 at-risk underserved youth in communities across Houston. Our programs have operated in over 30 public schools throughout the city. MOCAH has invested more than $1.5MM in community art projects and civic art commissions throughout Houston, providing over 70 professional and emerging artists with employment opportunities.

Outreach is at the core of MOCAH’s existence. MOCAH is expanding its’ reach beyond classrooms, clinics, canvases and mural walls. We are using art as a tool for community development. The organization is headquartered in Houston, Texas. MOCAH functions as a service provider as well as a producer and consultant of public art and other related art activities and media. Since our inception in 1999, MOCAH has initiated outreach programs to extend to underserved communities in the greater Houston area, particularly underserved inner-city neighborhoods.

LOCATION
MOCAH is nestled in the heart of downtown Houston’s historic artists’ warehouse district. Located at
908 Wood Street, MOCAH occupies a 12,000 square foot warehouse that provides administrative office space, studio and gallery space. The organization has been located in the current building since September 2006. This centralized location allows for easy access to the communities and audiences that MOCAH serves.

The Museum of Cultural Arts Houston is Houston’s leading developer of community based public art and cultural programming.  As a nonprofit art organization we are dedicated to the mission of using art and creativity as tools for social awareness and community development. We are committed to engaging the public in the design, development, production and celebration of site-specific public art projects and programs.  We believe that public art can transform civic spaces into cultural and artistic destinations.  Public art is at its best when the artwork reflects the culture and heritage of the people, communities or spaces that is serves.

MOCAH promotes community involvement, educational enrichment, historic preservation, sustainability, quality of life and resource management. Since 1999, we have completed over 120 commercial, civic, institutional, educational, residential, and historic preservation public art projects for a variety of public and private clients throughout the Houston/Harris County region. We believe our success is attributable to our attention to detail, collaborative spirit, technical experience, creativity, and true professionalism that we bring to every project.

MOCAH operates on the team approach, bringing together stakeholders, property owners, users, community residents and design professionals in a collaboration of knowledge, needs and efforts, realizing greater results and enhanced solutions. Over the past 11 years he has served as President and CEO of the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH), which is a non-profit art corporation that he co-founded in 1999 with his wife and art partner, Rhonda Radford-Adams.  Through MOCAH, Reginald has facilitated the design, coordination and production over 100 public art projects across the Houston area.  More than $3MM has been reinvested back into Houston communities through these public art projects and programs. These projects have been co-created with the involvement of over 15,000 area youth, 90 international, national and local artists and hundreds of community stakeholders.

He was actively involved in bringing new and quality affordable housing to Houston through his role as the President of the Land Assemblage Redevelopment Authority (LARA), a nonprofit corporation that acquires chronically tax delinquent properties throughout Houston. As President of LARA, Reginald helped guide and grow the organization towards being the largest nonprofit property owner in the city of Houston with an inventory of over 1,000 lots ready for development with annual revenues of over $12MM.  Over 250 affordable homes have been built through LARA over the past 4 years.

Reginald is a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum (ALF) Class 24, an alumnus of Leadership Houston Class 28 and President-elect of the Rotary Club of Houston Skyline.  He was recently honored by the Houston Press with their annual 2010 Mastermind Award, an honor recognizing creative professionals that are making a significant impact on the city of Houston through the arts.

Rhonda Radford-Adams is a native Houstonian and life artist whose style of artwork can be described as healing forms. With more than 30 years of studio experience, Rhonda’s paintings incorporate color and movements that are playful and visually intriguing.  Her designs offer visual affirmations that inspire, encourage and satisfy all that experience its presence. “My art is a reflection of my life’s experiences though color, form and movement.  Each creation is conjured by empowering emotions.”, says Rhonda.  Her latest body of creation is known as the ARTRRA Collection, a series of art inspired mantras brought to life in the original and published works of  Art by Rhonda Radford Adams.

Much of Rhonda’s creativity is fueled by her travels abroad and her fascination to understand ancient shamanic traditions of using art to come into alignment or focus with mind, body and soul.  From the bold and rhythmic patterns of West African fabrics to the fine handmade papers of Japan, Rhonda has juxtaposed these influences beautifully into a masterful array of art media such as paintings, collages and textiles. She has published several of her original art works, which are in public and private collections nationally and internationally.

Rhonda intends for her artwork to serve as an illustration of the uplifting and healing power that creative experiences provide us with.

By 2000, Rhonda’s passion for promoting social wellness through community creativity lead to the collective vision, with husband and creative partner Reginald, as co-founders for the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH). Included in the MOCAH family of programs, Rhonda also serves as director for the Art Angels Healing Arts Program, a program that provides art as a tool to help promote and advocate social wellness for various support groups. Rhonda has worked extensively with community based service organizations, hospitals and schools to provide opportunities for creative interaction with many.

Although she always considered a degree in the arts, Rhonda graduated from Lamar University with an Associate’s degree in Applies Sciences for Dental Hygiene in 1990.  However, Rhonda says she always knew that her career as a dental hygienist would lead to her passion for art.  Now with more than 20 years of experience she has managed to juxtapose her lingering enthusiasm for art and dentistry through a series of children’s health art stories, entitled “The Hot S.P.I.T. Chronicles”

Through her passion for life and a personal commitment to help provide art experiences to others, Rhonda combines  her visual art with an assemblage of inspiring words that have come to be known as the ARTRRA Mantra….

MOCAH offers (1) summer public art camp for 20 middle or high school students. Participants work alongside professional artist during a 4 week intensive art camp to design and produce a site specific public art project.

The camp includes a guided tour to experience some of Houston’s most historic communities and view MOCAH’s collection of community based public art projects. The tour enables students to

learn the intimate details of their design, creation and installation.  These projects entail mosaics, murals, sculptures and other civic art designs. Our program attracts highly dedicated and talented faculty, staff and students from around the world.  Together, they create an environment focused on craftsmanship as well as an exchange of artistic ideas, perspective and values. The art camp is designed to build fundamental skills in the public arts and develop students’ creativity.

The 4 week session allows students to experience the full range of visual arts from Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH).  Students participate in different projects for each session. Themes and projects for the camp are derived from research on local community, world cultures, geometry, arts and history.

Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Students will need to bring lunch each day.

MOCAH Public Art Campaign (MPAC): MPAC mission is to create public art that enhances cultural awareness, stimulates community development, and establishes partnerships
between youth, artists, communities, schools and businesses. All of our projects involve mentoring relationships between professional artists and students to produce community based public art.

Each Saturday, from 9am-12p, professional artists work with youth in designing and producing murals and other public artworks that become strategically placed in Houston’s most historic and underserved communities. By joining students with professional artists we are able to reinforce the impact and value that their work has on the community while providing the youth with hands on community development experience.
