Houston International Mural Exchange
Since 1999, the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) has become the leading producer of murals and community-based public art in Houston. With more than 118 projects in our collection, MOCAH is taking Houston and public art to another level with a new signature art event, the Houston International Mural Exchange (HIME).
Foreign governments have established 92 international consular offices in metropolitan Houston, ranking Houston third behind New York and Los Angeles. This is indicative of Houston’s stance as a truly international city.
HIME seeks to embrace and celebrate the international and cultural diversity of Houston through the HIMF. The festival in its entirety is a series of art, cultural, educational and community events that include a juried competition of public murals on exterior wall of buildings in the metropolitan Houston area during the fall of 2012. A kick-off to event is being planned for fall 2011.
Approximately 6-8 international, national, regional and local muralists or mural teams will be selected for residencies to paint murals on pre-selected walls and participate in festival activities. The public will be invited to participate on an interactive community mural which will be painted and completed during the weekend of the festival. As well, the public will have the opportunity to meet the artists and participate in the judging and selection of the Best Mural.
